Close Your Eyes When You Kiss Me

Have you ever thought of why most people close their eyes when they are kissing? I think it has something to do with going inside during the act of kissing to feel more intensely whatever you are feeling while kissing. When your eyes are closed you get to be inside yourself in a more pronounced and concentrated way.

It could also be a sign of accepting vulnerability and intimacy with the person you are kissing. The eyes are a predominant source of information regarding personal safety. We all expect to see danger coming before it gets to us, hopefully. When your eyes are open you are in a potentially defensive state of mind. You could say a person with his or her eyes closed has stopped being vigilant to one degree or another.

If you close your eyes in close proximity to another person, as in when you are kissing someone, you have left the state of potential defensiveness. You are now trusting that you are safe in the close presence of a particular person and temporarily without the need for external sight. From that state of mind, with your closed eyes, the two of you are now able to ‘join together’ for the duration of the kiss. If you think of love as the union of two people this idea makes lots of sense. Dr. T. Jordan
